Davies/Kirk History

It has been possible to trace the ‘Davies’ family back to 1762 to John David (great, great,great, great,great grandfather)(D.O.B ?). At that time there was no surnames in Wales only the term ‘Son of’ or ‘ap’ in Welsh, so John was son of David. On 29th January 1762 John David married Margaret John (D.O.B ?) in Ystradgynlais, Breconshire at St. Cynog’s Church. In 1763 they had a son John David, whose baptism was recorded on the 27th March 1763, at Blaen, Cadoxton-juxta-Neath.

On 8th July 1786 John David (1763-?) married Mary Hopkins at St. Cynogs Ystradgynlais. In 1790 Mary Hopkins died. The surname was changed from David to Davies when John David (1797-1869) and Thomas Davies (1795-?) when baptised as the church where the only ones who could write at this time.

John Davies was born in 1797 at Parcbach, near Ystradgynlaais in the Parish of Cadoxton-juxta-Neath. He was baptised on 13th April 1799 (age about 2) at St. Catwg, Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, Glamorgan.

On the 4th July 1825, he married Mary Watkins( no birth or death date found) in Llangyndir. They had four children, John Davies(1827-?). Catherine Davies (1828-?). Samuel Davies (1832-1894) and Mary Davies (1844-?). John Davies death is recorded as of 23rd April 1869 at Queen street, Tredegar, Monmouthshire. I am unable to confirm this properly, due to lack of proper records at this time.

SamuelDavies was born in 1832 in the parish of Llangynidr, Breconshire. On the 11th March 1854 he married Ann Davies(1831-1872) in St. Davids, Rhymney, Monm,outhshire. They had nine children John Davies(1854-?). David Davies(1858-?), Mary Davies(1860-?). Solomon Davies (1862-1930), Isaac Davies(1864-?),Richard Davies(1865-?), Mary Davies(1867-?).Elizabeth Davies(1869-?),and Thomas Davies(1871-1890).

On 21st December 1874 two years after Ann’s death Samuel Davies married Mary Thomas(1836-1903), at Bedwellty Parish Church. They had three children, Llewellyn Davies(1875-1883), Ruth Davies(1881-1883) and Alice Davies(1882-?).

On the 1861 census Samuel Davies is stated as an iron miner and by the 1871 census a collier

In 1894 on the 1st of August his burial was recorded at Dukestown Cemetery, Tredegar, Monmouthshire
